Running Discord Bots, Trading Bots, and Webhooks Behind NAT

Most bots only need outbound connections, but webhooks and local dashboards need an inbound port — here's how to expose just that.

Running Discord Bots, Trading Bots, and Webhooks Behind NAT

Most Discord bots and trading bots only make outbound connections — to Discord's API, to an exchange's API — which works fine from behind any home or office network with no special setup at all. But the moment you need something to connect to your bot (a webhook receiver, a local web dashboard, a callback URL from a payment provider or exchange), you need an inbound port reachable from the internet.

The common failure point: webhooks

Discord interactions webhooks, TradingView alert webhooks, exchange order-fill callbacks — all of these need to reach a specific port on your machine from the outside. If your bot runs on a home PC or a VPS without a public IP, these simply never arrive, and you won't always get an obvious error — the sender just times out silently.

The fix

A Port Forwarding Starter plan (₹49/month) forwards one or a few ports straight to wherever your bot runs:

  1. Connect your bot's server with the two-command setup
  2. Add a port rule for your webhook listener's port
  3. Point the webhook URL at your new public IP and port

Keeping it secure

Only forward the specific port your webhook listener uses — don't expose your bot's entire host. If your webhook endpoint doesn't verify request signatures (Discord, TradingView, and most exchanges support this), turn that on; a reachable webhook URL means anyone who finds it can send requests, so verification matters more once you're exposed to the internet.
