Keeping your Discord bot online and handling reconnects

Discord's gateway occasionally drops connections for reasons outside your control (Discord-side maintenance, network blips). A well-behaved bot reconnects automatically; most libraries handle this for you, but it's worth knowing what's happening.

Automatic reconnects are normal

Libraries like discord.js and discord.py handle gateway reconnects internally โ€” seeing a brief "reconnecting" message in your console isn't a sign of a problem by itself, as long as the bot comes back online afterward.

Handle uncaught errors

A single unhandled exception in an event handler can crash the whole process in some setups. Wrap command/event logic in try/catch (or your language's equivalent) so one bad command doesn't take the entire bot offline.

Rate limits

If your bot sends a lot of messages quickly (e.g. logging, bulk DMs), you may hit Discord's rate limits. Most libraries queue and retry automatically โ€” avoid working around rate limits by opening multiple connections with the same token, which risks your bot's account instead.

If it keeps crashing

Check Console for the actual error right before the crash โ€” this almost always points at the real cause (missing permission, invalid ID, unhandled promise rejection) faster than guessing. For trading/alert bots specifically, pair your own error handling with a scheduled restart as a safety net.
