Hosting Source Engine Game Servers: CS2, Garry's Mod, TF2 and More
What to know before renting a Source engine dedicated server for competitive or community play.
Hosting Source Engine Game Servers: CS2, Garry's Mod, TF2 and More
Source engine games (Counter-Strike 2, Garry's Mod, Team Fortress 2, and others built on the same engine family) share hosting needs that differ a fair bit from Minecraft or survival-crafting games.
Tick rate matters for competitive play
For CS2 and other competitive Source titles, server tick rate directly affects hit registration and overall feel โ a server under-provisioned for the player count will show it immediately to competitive players, even if the "lag" isn't network latency at all.
Garry's Mod addons add up fast
GMod servers commonly run dozens of Workshop addons simultaneously โ each one adds startup time and ongoing memory/CPU overhead. A server that ran fine with ten addons can slow to a crawl at fifty; audit your addon list periodically rather than only adding and never removing.
RCON and admin mod security
Source games commonly use RCON and third-party admin mods (SourceMod, ULX, etc.) for server management โ treat your RCON password and admin mod credentials with the same care as any other account password, and don't share them beyond trusted staff.
Custom maps and workshop content
Custom maps/content need to be available to connecting players (via Steam Workshop collection or fastdl) or they'll see a long download, or fail to connect entirely. Plan your map rotation around what's actually easy for players to download.
Getting started
Browse our Source Engine hosting category and size your plan around player count and addon/plugin load, not player count alone.
